Buganda commemorates 1966 storming of Lubiri Palace

The Buganda Kingdom is holding special prayers today at the Lubiri Palace in Mengo to commemorate the attack on Kabaka Frederick Mutesa II’s palace in Lubiri on 24 May 1966.

The palace was attacked on the orders of the then Prime Minister, Milton Obote, after the souring of his relationship with Buganda Kingdom officials.

The attack forced Kabaka Mutesa into exile in London where he later died on November 21st 1969.

The palace was turned into an army barracks after the attack in 1966. It was however returned to the Kingdom in 1993 when cultural institutions were restored.

A number of dignitaries are expected to attend the service which will presided over by retired Bishop of Namirembe, Samuel Balagadde Sekadde.
