Uhuru Kenyatta defends Ugandan sugar deal.

President Kenyatta has dismissed
opposition leader Raila Odinga’s
criticism that a sugar importation
deal signed between Kenya and
Uganda would be detrimental to
Kenya’s sugar industry.
Kenyatta said it is improper for
Odinga to claim that the trade pact
would flood the Kenyan market with
cheap sugar. He defended the deal
by saying that Kenya’s demand for
sugar was higher than local
production could supply.
Kenyatta further said that Kenya had
to import sugar anyway and it was
better if it imported the sugar from a
neighbouring country like Uganda with
whom Kenya had good trading ties.
Raila Odinga, however, maintained
that Kenyan sugarcane farmers would
suffer losses as a result of the sugar
imports from Uganda.
