Human Rights watch wants independent investigation into Kasese killings

Three months after the clashes between security operatives and the elements of the Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu kingdom in Kasese district which claimed 103 people including 16 police officers, Human Rights Watch an international human rights watchdog has called for an independent investigation into killings.

In their report released today, the watchdog based on the findings has recommended that commanding officers of the military operation which saw the Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere’s palace raided and ravaged step down to allow investigations.

The report gives specific reference to the recently promoted Maj. Gen Elwelu saying; “he should be removed from command until investigations conclude.”

However during a joint press briefing between UPDF and Police at Uganda Media Center, police spokesperson Andrew Kawesi has noted that that the law allows them to use excessive force in self-defense.

Kawesi adds that it is wrong for a report to give recommendations on a matter that is still in courts of law.

In his remarks, UPDF spokesperson Richard Karemire has rubbished the finding in the report and the recommendations that the commanding officers should step down.

On the same note Kaweesi has asked human rights defenders to allow courts of law do its work.
