UNBS bans twisted iron bars from the local market

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards has banned all twisted iron bars used in construction from the local market saying they are of a low quality. According to the executive director UNBS, Dr. Ben Manyindo, they have introduced a new type of iron bars called ribbed iron. Manufacturers have until July 2015 to sell off twisted iron bar stocks and adjust to the ribbed bars. While addressing the press at the Uganda Media Center, Dr. Manyindo said that the twisted bars have been proven weak and dangerous hence putting people’s lives at stake.
