President M7 in Sudan

September 15, 2015 · Mubiru Ali

President Museveni is later today flying to neighboring Sudan for talks with President Omar al-Bashir.

This is president Museveni’s first trip to Sudan since 2005. The two countries have had a strained relationship for decades with each side accusing the other of supporting their opponents.

Last year Khartoum recalled its ambassador to Kampala over claims Uganda was harboring Sudanese rebels.

The most pressing issue at today’s talks will be the ongoing fighting in South Sudan between government and rebel forces.

Over the years, Bashir has been a key supporter of rebel leader Riek Machar, while Uganda has troops in South Sudan to back the government.
