March 8, 2017 · Mubiru Ali

Hundreds of people are turning up for the main celebration in Dokolo district , Lamwo sub region in commemoration of the international women’s day meant to recognize the contribution and the different roles women play in the development process of the Country.

Many people are turning up including government officials, religious leaders, cultural leaders and many dignitaries with president Museveni as the guest of honour.

The day is commemorated every year on March 8th and the 2017
day is  under the theme “Women’s Empowerment in the changing world of work.”

The theme recognizes that the world of work is changing rapidly. There are significant gender gaps between men’s and women’s participation in paid employment and gender wage gaps still prevail worldwide.

According to sources from the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development, over the one year of implementation, the Programme has disbursed over Shs1.7 billion to a total of 349 groups within Kampala and the districts of Wakiso, Koboko, Kitgum, Kisoro, Bundibugyo, Kiruhura, Kaliro, Kamuli, Moroto, Katakwi, Mayuge, Nakasongola, Kalangala, Ntungamo, Otuke, Kole, Kibaale, Kayunga and Nebbi.

President Museveni stresses that a women fund was started to benefit women in the country.

A total of 4,627 women have been reached through the funded groups.
