Government withdraws the amendments to the KCCA Act 2010

Government has bowed to pressure to withdraw
amendments to the Kampala Capital City
Authority Act 2010.
The amendments, which included changing the
election of the Kampala Lord Mayor from adult
suffrage to the council, were tabled before
Parliament last week on Wednesday.
Subsequently, the EC halted nominations for Lord
Mayor which was scheduled to start yesterday,
stating that it was waiting for government to
avail regulations to govern the election as
required under Section 82 of the Act.
But in a U-turn, Engineer Badru Kiggundu,
Electoral Commission chairman says following a
consultative meeting with the Minister for
Kampala, Frank Tumwebaze, government has
resolved to hold the nominations.
In a brief statement, Kiggundu says the
nominations will be conducted from November 18
to 20 at the Office of the returning officer in
Ntinda, Kampala from 9 am to 5 pm.
