President Museveni says there’s a need for universities in Uganda to review some of the courses they teach students there if the high unemployment rate especially in the youths is to be brought down.

Presiding over the installation Ceremony of the new vice chancellor of Makerere University Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe at the Makerere University Main Hall, President Museveni says courses like Social Works and Social Administration and other others like Development Studies have not helped the students who have offered them but instead made them suffer.

He adds that universities should consider market oriented courses for students so that they are assured of jobs even when they are not employed by companies.

Museveni has at this point advised lecturers to take time and guide their students on the best courses to take on other than leaving them to pursue courses that won’t help them.

During his farewell speech, the outgoing Vice Chancellor Prof. Dumba Sentamu has highlighted some of the achievement he has achieved during his 5 year tenure of office.

Its at this point that the incoming Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has told journalists as he’s going to begin with some of the challenges the University is facing at the moment.

Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party president has asked religious and cultural leaders to join efforts with the opposition to stop attempts to amend article 102 from the constitution.

The article restricts those seeking to contest for presidency to between 35 and 75 years of age.
However, a group of National Resistance Movement party leaning legislators has endorsed a proposal to delete the article from the constitution to allow president, Yoweri Museveni to seek contest in the 2021 polls.

The group has tasked Raphael Magyezi, the Igara East MP, to spearhead the consultation process and present a private members bill on the floor of parliament.

Following the resolution by the NRM legislators, Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former FDC party president, has asked religious and cultural leaders to join the opposition to stop attempts to temper with the said constitutional provision.

While campaigning for Doreen Watsemba, the FDC candidate for the Namisindwa district woman MP seat on Wednesday, Besigye said those with intentions of amending the constitution can only be stopped once Ugandans speak with one voice.

He said it is up to the voters to push the legislators and their leaders not to tamper with the constitution. Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the FDC General Secretary also asked the voters to punish all the legislators in support of the proposed amendment. He explained that the constitution is a sacred document that should be protected at all cost.

A section of lawmakers from the ruling National Resistance movement 245 in total have resolved to present a private members bill scrapping the age limit cap from the Constitution.

This has been reached at a consultative caucus meeting chaired by workers MP Arinaitwe Rwakajara.

The idea for a private members bill has been fronted by the minister of Defence Adolf Mwesige, who argues that age limit no longer matches with today’s quality of life where the life expectancy is 78 years unlike in 1995 when it was 47.

Jackson Kafuzi, the MP Kyaka south constituency moved the motion giving reasons that the older people glow the wiser and more respected they become hence no need to bar any one from contesting because of their age.

She says she didn’t know the subject matter that was going to be discussed and is opposed to bringing up the age limit issue before the minimum demands of the public like health; education and infrastructure have not yet been handled as presented in the NRM manifesto.

Meanwhile, the Ssembabule woman Member of Parliament Hanifah Kawooya attacked Amoding for acting in hypocrite manner even when she was briefed before the meeting was convened.

National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has partnered with MTN Uganda to enable of social security contributions using Mobile Money.

The partnership enables NSSF members on the NSSF Voluntary Membership Plan as well as small and medium sized entities to conveniently make payments using MTN Mobile Money. NSSF on the other hand will be able to receive contributions promptly, thus enhancing its contributions process efficiency.

At a joint press conference today held at Workers House, Wim Vanhelleputte, the MTN Uganda CEO noted that this was part of fostering financial inclusion through easing the payments process of pensions that are critical to avoiding poverty in old age.

“In the last eight years, MTN Mobile Money has had significant impact in the transformation of people’s lives. Now we are further enabling people to pay for their NSSF Contributions using MTN Mobile Money. This will enable a significant part of our customers pay their pension and ensure they don’t retire into poverty,” Wim said.

NSSF Uganda Managing Director Richard Byarugaba also emphasized that the MTN Mobile Money payments will ease the payments process since it is convenient.

“MTN Mobile Money benefits both our members and the Fund. In a survey we conducted last year on voluntary contributions, 67% of respondents cited mobile money as a preferred transaction method when remitting their social security contributions.”

Byarugaba has clarified that MTN Mobile Money can be used by both voluntary contributors under the NSSF Voluntary Contributions Plan as well as established entities, especially those that remit less than 4 million shillings in social security contributions per month.

NSSF launched the Voluntary Contributions Plan to provide an opportunity to workers not covered by the mandatory provisions of the NSSF Act, as well as those in gainful self-employment that were previously contributing to the Fund to voluntarily save.
