Head-On Collision on Kampala-GuluHighway Claims 63 Lives

KITALEBA VILLAGE – A devastating head-on collision between two buses on the Kampala-Gulu Highway early Wednesday has left 63 people dead and several others injured, according to a police statement.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m. on October 22, 2025, near Kitaleba Village. Preliminary investigations indicate that the disaster unfolded when the drivers of two Isuzu buses, traveling in opposite directions, simultaneously attempted dangerous overtaking maneuvers.

One bus, belonging to Nile Star Coaches, tried to pass a Tata lorry heading towards Gulu. At the same moment, a bus from Planet Company, coming from the opposite direction, attempted to overtake a Toyota Surf. The two buses collided head-on, triggering a chain reaction that caused the other vehicles to lose control and overturn.

Police and emergency services responded promptly to the scene. The injured were transported to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Kiryandongo Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations and identification.

In a press statement, SP Kananura Michael of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to the injured. The police have reiterated their urgent appeal to all motorists to avoid dangerous and careless overtaking, a leading cause of fatal crashes in the country.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
