Immunisation of children made compulsory.

Any person who, without lawful excuse, refuses
to take a child for immunisation will face a six
months’ jail sentence or a fine of 240,000
shillings, once the president assents to the
Immunisation Bill 2014.

The Immunisation Bill2014 , passed by Parliament this evening, provides provides for compulsory immunisation of children, women of reproductive age and other target groups  against immunisable diseases. The bill

that was tabled as a private members’ bill by
Yumbe Woman MP, Huda Oleru, also compels
day care centers, pre-primary and primary
schools to demand for production of an
immunization card before a child is admitted.
While presenting a report by the Health
Committee, the chairperson, Dr. Medard
Bitekyerezo noted that the stringent measures
are aimed at reducing incidences of parents and
religious sects which shun immunisation.
