A Mother Convicted to Five Months in Prison
Buganda road court has sentenced a mother to five months in prison after convicting her of throwing her new born child in a pit latrine.
Scovia Atai, 20, pleaded guilty to charges before Grade One Magistrate, Joan Aciro.
It’s said that in May this year Atai sought refuge at a church in Masanafu-Kinonya zone in Kampala, where she got into labour.
She then moved to a nearby latrine and helped herself to deliver the baby girl, after which she dumped it in.
People who were praying at the church heard a baby crying and informed the police that retrieved it from the latrine.
While sentencing her magistrate Aciro noted that throwing newly- born babies is so rampant that the likes of the convict should not go scot-free, but be punished to deter other would be offenders.
